History
Brigham Young himself chose the spot for the Mormon temple built in Salt Lake City in 1847. The area surrounding the temple came to be known as Temple Square. The ten-acre campus contains several historical buildings that are important to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints faith, including the tabernacle, the Salt Lake Assembly Hall, and the temple itself.
Today, Temple Square serves as the headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints with many of the organizational head offices located here. Temple Square attracts three to five million visitors per year, making it the top tourist destination in the entire state of Utah.
